Customization options: what's worth paying for

before you buy · budget · customisation

Every order form has the same twenty-odd boxes, and the manufacturer has no incentive to tell you which ones matter. Most of the visible choices are free. A few of the paid ones change how the doll works day to day. A couple are worth skipping outright and solving with something you already own.

Free, and usually included

Nearly every maker includes these at no extra cost, so pick whatever you actually want rather than treating them as upgrades:

  • Skin tone: pale, natural, tan, dark.
  • Eye colour: swappable later; eyes pop out.
  • Wig: synthetic, and easy to replace with any wig of the right cap size.
  • Areola size and colour, labia colour: preference, nothing else.
  • Nail colour: changeable later with doll-safe polish.

None of these lock you in. If you're agonising over eye colour, don't: it's a two-minute change after delivery.

Worth paying for

Standing feet. Bolts run from the skeleton through the soles so the doll can stand on its own. This is the one upgrade that changes what you can do, photography, wardrobe changes, and several storage options all assume it. The cost is small bolt heads visible on the soles, unless you pay more for the "standing, no bolts" silicone version. Skip only if you're certain the doll will never need to stand. Note that a doll without foot bolts must never be stood up: its own weight crushes the sole (see care & cleaning).

Removable vagina. A detachable insert rather than a fixed one. It turns the most tedious part of ownership, cleaning the canals after every use, into pulling out a sleeve, washing it, and drying it properly. Most makers include a spare. Some owners report a slightly looser fit than fixed. For hygiene alone this is the easiest yes on the form.

Gel breasts. Gel-filled rather than solid or hollow. You get the softness of hollow without hollow's tendency to split, and they behave far more naturally than solid. If the doll is B-cup or larger this is the best value upgrade available. A-cup bodies generally can't take the inserts at all.

Worth considering

Upgraded skeleton (EVO and equivalents). Shrugging shoulders, double-jointed arms and legs, a more flexible spine. In practice it means poses a standard frame can't hold. Worth it if posing or photography is a real part of why you're buying; a standard skeleton is genuinely fine otherwise. The posing guide covers what the frame does.

Articulated fingers. Standard fingers are wire inside the TPE. They bend easily, hold a pose poorly, and eventually the wire fatigues and pokes through, which is the most common small repair owners face. Articulated finger bones have individual joints: they look right, hold a grip, and don't work through the skin. If the hands appear in photographs, pay for it.

Usually worth skipping

Built-in heating. An internal element warms the torso over roughly half an hour. It draws mains power, it's a wire inside a body you regularly get wet, and it's a warranty problem when it fails. An electric blanket for a few minutes before use does the same job, costs a fraction, and can be replaced.

Built-in voice or moaning. A speaker and board in the back, triggered by movement. The audio is poor, the responsiveness is worse, and it's another sealed electronic component in something you wash. A phone does this better.

Both add cost and both add a failure mode to a product you can't easily open. If you have either, keep water well away from the speaker and circuit board when cleaning.

Silicone-only and finishing options

Silicone bodies unlock finishing work TPE can't hold: implanted hair rather than a wig, hand-painted body makeup, visible veins and blushing, and more detailed sculpting around the face. These are what people mean when they say silicone photographs better. They're also permanent, because body makeup is paint, and oil-based cleaning strips it, so a made-up doll needs a water-only routine.

The short version

Always: standing feet, removable vagina, gel breasts (B-cup and up). Consider: upgraded skeleton, articulated fingers. Both are about posing. Skip: heating and voice. External alternatives are better and cheaper. Everything cosmetic is free and changeable later.
