Skeletons and posing: what the frame actually does
Under the skin, every doll has an articulated steel skeleton, and it decides more than people realise: which poses hold, whether the doll can stand, and how natural it looks in a photo. The skin material gets all the attention, but two dolls with identical skin and different skeletons behave completely differently.
Standard vs EVO
The baseline skeleton bends at the obvious joints: shoulders, elbows, hips, knees. An EVO skeleton adds more, most notably a pair of collarbone joints that let the shoulders shrug up and inward. That small change unlocks a much wider range of natural poses (hugging, hands-to-chest, relaxed shoulders), which is why photographers treat EVO as close to essential. It's often offered free during promotions, so it's usually worth taking.
Advanced "gear" skeletons
The newest skeletons replace simple ball joints with geared, interlocking mechanisms for smoother, sturdier movement. Where they're fitted, expect capabilities like:
- Neck: a universal joint with full 360° rotation that holds any angle, instead of a stiff two-way nod.
- Waist: 360° rotation plus front-back and side-to-side lean, for natural sitting and twisting.
- Elbows: full rotation that avoids the unnatural "twist" of simpler arms.
- Thighs: free movement for sitting and wider poses.
- Hands: more finger flexibility and better puncture resistance, so gestures hold without damaging the skin.
- Feet and ankles: up-and-down flex plus rotation, with a shaped arch for a lifelike stance.
You'll sometimes see these described as "old gear" vs "new gear" skeletons; it's worth checking which generation a doll uses if posing matters to you.
Standing
A doll can only stand if it's built to stand. Standing models embed three screws in the soles, giving a three-point base; the skin around them is thinner so the frame can carry the weight. Those screws being faintly visible or touching the ground is by design, not a fault. Balance the doll by adjusting the feet and ankles so the weight sits evenly over the soles.
A doll without foot screws should never be stood: the sole skin isn't reinforced, so its own weight crushes and eventually punctures it, and it can't keep its balance. Pose those models lying or seated.
Fingers: articulated vs wire
Hands come two ways: wire fingers (a bendable armature you pose by hand) and articulated finger joints (sturdier, more precise). Articulated hands hold gestures better and resist damage; wire is simpler and common on lower-cost dolls. (We're still gathering detail here — treat this as a starting point.)
Pose it without wrecking it
The flip side of a flexible skeleton is that holding a stressed pose too long tears the skin. Enjoy the range, then return the doll to a neutral resting position, the same rule as in the care guide.
